Notice of Additional Public Hearing in Cambridge

ID: 1169391

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/09/12 -- The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario has scheduled an additional public hearing in Cambridge to engage citizens in a discussion on possible changes to the boundaries of federal electoral districts in the area.

In August, the Commission published its proposal for a new electoral map, for discussion at hearings this fall. Public feedback has led the Commission to consider significant changes to the electoral districts of Perth-Wellington, Kitchener-Conestoga, Wellington-Halton Hills, Brant, and the proposed electoral district of Kitchener South-North Dumfries-Brant.

In the Commission's original proposal, the electoral district of Perth-Wellington was to remain unchanged. The Commission is now proposing to remove the townships of Mapleton and Wellington North and the Town of Minto from Perth-Wellington and to add them to the electoral district of Wellington-Halton Hills. In addition, the Commission is now proposing to remove the townships of Wellesley and Wilmot from the electoral district of Kitchener-Conestoga and to add them to the electoral district of Perth-Wellington, which the Commission proposes to rename Perth-Wellesley-Wilmot.

The Commission is now proposing to remove the Township of Woolwich from the electoral district of Kitchener-Conestoga and to add it to the electoral district of Wellington-Halton Hills, with the result that the originally proposed electoral district of Kitchener-Conestoga would be eliminated.

In the Commission's original proposal, the electoral district of Wellington-Halton Hills was to remain unchanged. The Commission is now proposing to add the townships of Wellington North, Mapleton and Woolwich and the Town of Minto to the electoral district, and to remove the Town of Halton Hills. The electoral district would be renamed Wellington-Woolwich. The electoral district of Kitchener South-North Dumfries-Brant was a new electoral district in the Commission's proposal. The proposed electoral district included a substantial portion of the City of Brant, including the communities of Paris and St. George. The Commission is now proposing a revision: the electoral district would include only the northerly portion of the City of Brant lying north of Paris Plains Church Road, Scenic Drive and Howell Road.

The Commission is now proposing a much larger electoral district of Brant to include the City of Brantford and most of the City of Brant. In addition to the small portion of the city being assigned to the electoral district of Kitchener South-North Dumfries, a small portion in the southwest side of the city, lying west of Middletownline Road, would be assigned to the electoral district of Oxford. As well a small portion of the city, lying north of Madden Side Road, Langford Church Road and Baptist Church Road would be assigned to the proposed electoral district of Ancaster-Flamborough-Glanbrook.

"We want to give citizens who would be affected an opportunity to express their views," said the Honourable Mr. Justice George Valin, Chair of the Commission. "The new hearing is simply a matter of due process, transparency and ensuring full public participation."

The public hearing will take place on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at 9:30 a.m., in the City Hall Council Chambers, 46 Dickson Street, in Cambridge.

Everyone is invited to attend. You can also share your views with the Commission by sending a written submission by e-mail to or by calling 1-855-747-7224.
