CanNor Investment Contributes to Efficient Regulatory Process
New Pilot Study will assess archaeological and heritage resources in areas of increased mining activity in Yukon
(firmenpresse) - WHITEHORSE, YUKON -- (Marketwire) -- 11/08/12 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council announced today an investment that will help identify archaeological and heritage resources, while supporting an efficient regulatory process for mining projects in Yukon.
"The Government of Canada is committed to the timely review of all resource exploration and development projects in the North," said Minister Aglukkaq. "By investing in projects for research and data collection, we are contributing to a more predictable and stable investment climate in Yukon, which will help create long-term prosperity for Northerners and Canadians alike."
"Small scale mining operations, including placer mines, are important contributors to the Yukon economy," said Yukon Member of Parliament Ryan Leef. "This study has the potential to create more jobs in the mining sector while ensuring the effective management and protection of important archaeological and heritage resources in the territory."
"We look forward to working with our partners to ensure Yukon's archaeological resources are safeguarded," said Tourism and Culture Minister Mike Nixon. "This project will result in better information on heritage resources while helping the mining sector meet regulatory requirements."
CanNor's investment of $329,100 will enable the Yukon government to carry out a two-year pilot study using Geographic Information System (GIS)-based modelling. The pilot will occur in two eco-regions of Yukon where mining activity is taking place: Dawson and Mayo mining districts. The GIS-based models will provide information on where archaeological resources are located which will assist miners in project planning and design.
The project is a cooperative effort of Yukon government, Tr'ondek Hwech'in and Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nations.
This investment is funded by CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
