At the turn of the millennium, RMJM recognized the architectural culture in Turkey had started to take on its own form. During the building boom of the 2000s RMJM was in place and answering the task. Their architectural team turned to the proficient, contextual and pragmatic stylings of the Ottoman & Nationalistic influences. They sourced the rich and iconic architecture of Turkey's past to affect their modern realizations.
Today, as the level of design continues to rise in Turkey, the level of architecture through distinct technical, ideological or architectonic rationale is also finding new heights.
As Turkey asserts its position in the center of the newly forming geopolitics of Europe and Asia, the design leadership provided by regional architects like RMJM will be important in setting standards for how architecture can balance the needs of the modern world with the pragmatic approaches required and respected at the local level.
Nowhere is this respect for local surrounding more apparent than in Instanbul, just the latest in a line of achievements for RMJM. This project won the design competition for Mixed Use Development by encapsulating the characteristics that make Istanbul so unique: its relationship to its landscape, its rich cultural diversity and its idealistic tradition of street life.
