The Options Industry Council Announces Options Trading Volume Declined 17% in October
(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 11/01/12 -- The Options Industry Council (OIC) announced today that 324,329,913 total options contracts were traded in October which is 17.05 percent less than the 390,982,436 contracts traded in October 2011.
On average, 15,444,282 contracts changed hands each day, which is down 17.05 percent from the 18,618,211 contracts traded on average in October of last year. Volume numbers for October reflect that there were two fewer trading days in October as a result of market closures due to Hurricane Sandy.
Year-to-date volume stood at 3,355,815,364 contracts, which is down 13.91 percent compared to the same point last year when 3,898,045,930 were traded. Daily average year-to-date volume came in at 16,056,533 contracts and is off 13.50 percent from last year's 18,562,123 contracts.
Equity options volume (options on individual stocks and ETFs) for October was 297,991,460 contracts, down 17.24 percent compared to October of last year when 360,081,121 contracts were traded. On average, 14,190,070 equity options contracts were exchanged each day in October, which is 17.24 percent less than the daily average of 17,146,720 contracts from October 2011. Equity options traded so far this year stood at 3,092,072,202 contracts, down 14.31 percent compared to the 3,608,405,887 contracts traded in the same period last year.
