Minister Raitt Commends New Collective Agreement Between Algoma Great Lakes Shipping and CAW Canada
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/30/12 -- Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, congratulated Algoma Great Lakes Shipping and the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW Canada), Local 4401, on ratifying a new collective agreement.
"I am very pleased that Algoma Great Lakes Shipping and CAW Canada worked together to reach an agreement without resorting to a work stoppage," said Minister Raitt. "Strong labour-management relations benefit the economic prosperity and security of Canadians."
CAW Canada represents a unit of approximately 300 unlicensed personnel working for Algoma Great Lakes Shipping, a Canadian marine transportation company. The new collective agreement is valid until March 31, 2015, and replaces the previous agreement, which expired on March 31, 2011.
The agreement was reached with assistance from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
