Statement by Vice-Admiral Maddison in Anticipation of Navy Appreciation Day 2012

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/30/12 -- Vice-Admiral Paul Maddison, Commander Royal Canadian Navy, issued the following statement in anticipation of the Navy League of Canada's Navy Appreciation Day 2012, taking place on Parliament Hill on Tuesday, October 30:

"Navy Appreciation Day is a special moment in the year when Canada's parliamentarians are invited to celebrate their Navy and its people for their contributions to Canada. Those contributions begin at home. Canada borders on three separate oceans and has the world's longest coastline. Accordingly, our most fundamental duty is to protect Canada's security and its sovereign interests in our three ocean approaches. But our Navy does far more than that, and in ways that are connected profoundly to the daily lives of all Canadians.

"As Prime Minister Harper recently said 'Canada's economy floats on salt water.' Our prosperity as a trading nation in this globalized era is linked inextricably with the oceans as the superhighways of global economy. Navies have always been about economics and commerce, and Canada's Navy is no exception. Our most important strategic task in today's rules-based international system is to keep the world's oceans safe for trade, but always 'ready, aye, ready' to go into harm's way when the nation calls upon us to do so. The right Navy for Canada is a strong, well-equipped, well-led Navy, crewed by the finest sailors in the world, capable of deploying anywhere in the world, but first and foremost operating at home to keep Canada's three oceans as part of 'the True North, strong and free'.

"Navy Appreciation Day is not only about that strong, globally deployable Navy, but also about the future Navy that the Government has set out in its Canada First Defence Strategy and which it is firmly resolved to deliver through its National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy.

"Navy Appreciation Day is an opportunity for our elected representatives to learn more about the achievements of our Navy's most important resource: its personnel. I personally invite everyone to join me in thanking those who serve in the Royal Canadian Navy whose contributions and sacrifices have benefitted the whole nation."
