Grandmothers Staunchly Behind Affordable Medicines Bill: Send Shout Out to Parliament Hill
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/29/12 -- On October 31 and November 1st, hundreds of determined women from the Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN), their supporters and partner organizations will shout from "hilltops" across the country to urge parliamentarians to pass legislation that gives people in the developing world access to affordable life-saving medicines.
GRAN is a Canadian voice for grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa caring for millions of AIDS-orphaned children. The stark reality is that there are still more than 7.5 million people worldwide who do not have access to HIV/AIDS treatment and, without medicines, more than half of babies born with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa do not reach their second birthday.
Bill C-398 now before parliament will fulfill Canada's eight-year-old promise to provide affordable generic medicines to the world's poor. GRAN is hopeful that this groundswell of support will remind parliamentarians of the urgent and humanitarian need to pass this legislation.
More than 100 Canadian, African and international NGOs have signalled their support for the bill, including Oxfam, UNICEF Canada, the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and Uganda's AIDS Support Organization.
