Automobile.com Survey Finds that Interest in Small Cars Continues to Rise, Insurance Rates of Most Popular Models Compared

ID: 1164027

A recent survey done by Automobile.com finds that small cars are making a comeback. The sale of small cars by Ford, Chevrolet and Honda are at their highest since 1993. In addition to discovering this interest in compact and subcompact cars, Automobile.com also compares insurance costs between the three most popular small car models.

(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/25/12 -- has discovered that the sales of compact and subcompact cars are on the rise. More than 20 percent of the cars sold last month were small models, which is the highest percentage of small car sales since 1993. Even in the first nine months of 2012, the sale of compact and subcompact cars have increased by 50 percent from 2011.

While the survey does demonstrate that the popularity of small cars continues to rise, the survey does not determine whether the rising cost of gas is the driving force behind this trend.

However, Automobile.com does highlight which three small models are the most popular. The survey found that the three most popular models this year are the Honda Civic, the Ford Fiesta and the Chevrolet Cruze. Honda Civic sales have increased by 56 percent from last year, and Chevrolet Cruze sales have increased by 36 percent from last year.

Andrew Evans, an Automobile.com columnist, explains why the survey went beyond simply discovering which cars were the most popular: "Whether consumers are looking to save money on gas or are attracted to the MSRPs, we wanted to get a better understanding of the insurance cost trends to inform readers."

insurance premiums between this year's three most popular small cars. The survey found that a Honda Civic costs, on average, $887.63 a year to insure. The Ford Fiesta costs an average of $924.00 a year to insure, while the Chevrolet Cruze was found to be the most expensive to insure, costing $1,037.00 a year. Interestingly, owners of the Honda Civic are also the youngest, averaging 41.5 years of age. For a visual representation of the insurance premium comparison, see: .
