Downtown Windsor BIA Launches Campaign to Save the Detroit Fireworks
(firmenpresse) - WINDSOR, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/22/12 -- Following recent reports announcing that the annual Target Fireworks will cease, the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (DWBIA) has launched a campaign to bring them back.
The Fireworks have been held for over half a century and families, from both sides of the border, have come to view the spectacular display year after year. While the Target Corporation has been the annual Fireworks sponsor, the City of Detroit spends around $700,000 annual on the provision of security and traffic for the event. As a result of reductions in spending, the City of Detroit can no longer incur these costs.
The Downtown Windsor BIA aims to raise funds to help the City of Detroit offset these expenses, and in so doing continue the tradition of hundreds of thousands lining the Detroit and Windsor riverfronts for the Fireworks. The DWBIA has pledged $5,000 cash and has set up a website to further this goal.
"The Detroit Fireworks are a tradition for many families and a huge economic driver for our members and merchants," Larry Horwitz, Board Chair for the DWBIA, said in the news release. "We need to do everything we can to keep the Fireworks alive!"
The DWBIA works to ensure that downtown Windsor is the preferred place to work, live, visit, shop and play. With over 615 members, it represents the interest of all its members and actively seeks to build a vibrant and thriving downtown.
