(firmenpresse) - BROCKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/19/12 -- Today, Gordon Brown, Member of Parliament for Leeds-Grenville, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, recognized 3M Canada's achievement in meeting two internationally recognized energy standards.

3M Canada's Brockville Tape Plant is the first facility in Canada and the second in the world to attain accreditation for the ISO 50001 standard for energy management as well as reach Platinum Level under the Superior Energy Performance program. 3M's Brockville plant has demonstrated an energy performance improvement of more than 15 percent over the past three years.

"Improving energy efficiency is one of the fastest, greenest and most cost-effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases, save energy and increase energy security," said MP Brown. "Congratulations to 3M Canada for demonstrating that reducing cost and greenhouse gas emissions is good for the environment and for business."

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) provided $155,000 in support through the ecoENERGY Efficiency for Industry program to the energy management initiative at 3M's plant. This initiative is a pilot project under the Canada-U.S. Clean Energy Dialogue, established in February 2009 to enhance joint collaboration on the development of clean energy science and technologies to reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change.

"At 3M Canada, energy efficiency and energy management is a major priority in our offices, research laboratories, and especially in our manufacturing facilities," said Paul Madden, President and General Manager, 3M Canada. "We're so proud to be the first company in Canada to earn the honour of ISO 50001 with Superior Energy Performance at the Platinum level and are sincerely thankful to Natural Resources Canada for all their support."

MP Brown presented a plaque on behalf of NRCan in recognition of the ISO 50001 certification. ISO 50001 is a framework for industrial facilities to manage energy use, and provides a strategy for businesses to reduce their energy consumption.

NRCan's ecoENERGY Efficiency Program, a suite of initiatives, is investing $195 million over five years to promote improvements in energy use in Canada - at home, at work and on the road.
