Canadian Government Continues to Cause Angst for Public Servants

ID: 1161728

(firmenpresse) - (OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/12 -- The National Association of Federal Retirees (FSNA) is disappointed in the most recent omnibus budget bill (C-45) being introduced in the House of Commons today. "Once again public servants are being kept in the dark when it comes to how their employment conditions will be affected by their employer," said Sylvia Ceacero, FSNA Executive Director, "While we agree that it is more than time for MPs' pensions to be reformed, the double standard created today is troubling on many levels."

Public service, Canadian Forces and RCMP members will see their pension contribution rates increase in order to achieve a 50-50cost-sharing ratio with their employer, the Government of Canada. Pension contribution rate increases will be implemented on January 1, 2013. However, the timeline of the contribution rate increases required to meet the 50-50 cost sharing ration has not been announced. Meanwhile MPs' contribution rates and phase-in period have been defined, reaching the 50-50 ratio by 2016.

"Public servants who may be worrying about whether they will be employed next year are now also worrying about how much less they will be taking home," said Ceacero. "We will continue to analyze the second budget omnibus bill so that we can inform our members, current and future, on reforms to their pensions."FSNA is the largest national advocacy organizations representing federal retirees - their partners and survivors - from the public service of Canada, the Canadian Forces, RCMP and the retired federally appointed judges. FSNA is a not-for-profit association with more than 177,000 members and 84 branches across Canada. Its mission is to protect and enhance the pension, health and dental insurance benefits of federal retirees, and senior's benefits in general.
