(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/17/12 -- Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women and Under Secretary-General of the UN, will speak to the Halifax PEACE Symposium via a video presentation and Hanny Cueva Beteta, Policy Advisor, from UN Women headquarters, will deliver the keynote address. These two presentations will follow opening introductions and remarks by Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee.

The theme of the 2012 Symposium, Peace, Security and Gender Equity, is taken up in light of the crucial role played by women in peace-making, peace-keeping and peace-building, even though this role is often limited by inequality and violence. "Women make up more than half of the world's population and yet nearly 70 per cent live in poverty, 60 per cent go hungry and countless numbers of women remain unemployed or underemployed. These women face injustice, discrimination and obstacles that stand in their way of achieving their basic needs. To achieve gender equality we need to work together in creating opportunities for women and girls and I am pleased to be part of the 2012 Symposium to discuss with other thought leaders how to put women's needs first," says Jiwani.

The PEACE Symposium will explore the issue and the global actions that need to be taken for the contributions of women to be fully realized. "We are delighted to have Almas Jiwani on the program for our Second Annual PEACE Symposium, since the topic, Peace, Security and Gender Equity, is one to which she has contributed in important ways through her impressive career as an activist for both peace and women's rights, and now as the President of the UN Women Canada National Committee. Her role very appropriately will include introducing a short video from the Under Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Michele Bachelet, and introducing the keynote speaker, Ms. Hanny Cueva Beteta, Policy Advisor, from UN Women's New York headquarters. Almas will also offer her own opening remarks on the topic and take part in the question and discussion period with all the speakers," says K. Scott Wood, an organizer of the 2012 PEACE Symposium.

Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women and the Under Secretary-General of the United Nations, will address the Symposium via a video presentation. Ms. Hanny Cueva-Beteta will deliver keynote address following Ms Jiwani's opening remarks.

Linda Jones, Head of the Coady Institute's Women Empowerment program at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish will also be a speaker and join Almas and Hanny in the final panel discussion. The Universalist Unitarian Church of Halifax will host the 2012 PEACE Symposium on Sunday October 21, 2012 from 2:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the McNally Theatre at Saint Mary's University in Halifax. Details about the program and registration can be found at the Symposium Website: .
