National Patient Safety Foundation Appoints VHA's CNO Lillee Gelinas to Board of Directors

(firmenpresse) - IRVING, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/11/12 -- recently named VHA vice president and chief nursing officer Lillee Gelinas, RN, MSN, FAAN, to its board of directors. As a board member, Gelinas is responsible for providing strategic and operational oversight and is vested with fiduciary responsibilities for the foundation.

"Having been an advocate for patient safety for more than 30 years, I am excited to work with distinguished health care leaders to address the needs of the patient and to improve patient safety in the delivery of health care," Gelinas said.

Gelinas is a nationally recognized speaker and thought leader on clinical matters, health care management and nursing and patient safety issues. Numerous national organizations have sought her expertise, including the American Nurses Association, The Joint Commission, the Institute of Medicine, the National Patient Safety Foundation, the National e-Health Collaborative and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

At , Gelinas is active in collaborative patient safety improvement initiatives including VHA's Hospital Engagement Network (HEN), which is part of the Partnership for Patients initiative launched by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Gelinas drives the educational content and moderates VHA's Partnership for Patients Education Series and works with senior leaders in the VHA HEN. She also contributes her patient safety and workforce expertise to hospitals engaged with VHA IMPERATIV™.

"Having worked with and listened to the CNOs and senior leaders nationwide, we know we must reduce readmissions and prevent harm to patients. The work that NPSF, the HENs and other organizations are doing is instrumental to improving the quality of care," said Gelinas.

Earlier this year, Gelinas was a featured speaker in the Partnership for Patients - National Priorities Partnership patient safety webinar series where she provided an overview of the NPP's role in improving safety. Additionally, she highlighted VHA's ongoing success working with hospitals to provide safe and effective care using VHA's improvement tools, resources and approaches.





Gelinas regularly facilitates programs with chief nursing officers and nursing leaders throughout VHA's national and regional networks and moderates numerous broadcasts and webinars. She also serves as the nurse planner for VHA's educational programs and assures adherence to American Nurse Credentialing Center guidelines for more than 200 programs annually. These include the vhatv Nursing Leadership Excellence Series and Return to Care® a VHA-sponsored process improvement program to help nurses gain more time at the patient bedside.
