Statement From Doug Ulman, President and CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation
(firmenpresse) - AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/10/12 -- Today, President and CEO issued the following statement regarding the United States Anti-Doping Agency's proceeding against , the Foundation's creator and chairman:
"Our long-standing concerns about the impartiality and fairness of USADA's proceeding are compounded today. As a federal judge pointed out, USADA appears motivated more by publicity rather than fulfilling its mission.
"Lance Armstrong's legacy as a cancer fighter is literally second to none. Because of his leadership and vision, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has served more than 2.5 million people affected by cancer over the last 15 years. His courage in speaking out about his own diagnosis sparked a cultural shift in this country in how we think about cancer survivors. His leadership helped produce a $3 billion investment in cancer research and prevention in Texas in 2007, with the passage of Proposition 15. Lance devoted six years to serving this nation on the President's Cancer Panel. His dedication to advancing the fight against cancer in the United States and throughout the world is unparalleled. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and incredibly proud of his achievements, both on and off the bike."
The Lance Armstrong Foundation was established in 1997, as Lance was completing his treatment for cancer and before he had resumed his cycling career.
The Foundation provides free, bilingual patient navigation services to cancer patients/survivors and their families facing financial, practical and emotional challenges. More than 2.5 million people have been served by LIVE Navigation Services through one-to-one support, printed and online educational materials.
The Foundation also advocates for funding, legislation and policies that further the fight against cancer. Lance and the Foundation recently backed Proposition 29, a California initiative designed to raise funds for cancer research through a $1 tobacco tax increase. Lance and the Foundation successfully backed Proposition 15 in Texas, passed overwhelmingly by voters in 2007. It created the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas and a $3 billion fund for cancer research within the state.
