Media Advisory: Award-winning documentary about Wisconsin uprising has lessons for Canada
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/09/12 -- Los Angeles documentary-maker Amie Williams will be attending the Ottawa premiere of her latest film, We Are Wisconsin:
We Are Wisconsin garnered standing ovations at Toronto's Hot Docs film festival in Toronto and was voted fourth best film by the festival audience. The film highlights the human stories behind the popular uprising forged inside the Madison Capitol building in 2011 against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's controversial "budget repair bill".
"CUPE stood with our brothers and sisters in Wisconsin when the state dramatically cut spending on public services and took away collective bargaining rights from public sector workers," says Canadian Union of Public Employees National President Paul Moist. " Now, Wisconsin style attacks on the public service have come to Canada. It is more important than ever to stand up for public service here in Canada, and to continue to work with our brothers and sisters from Wisconsin and around the world.
Rachel Friedman, a social worker featured in the documentary, will also attend the screenings.
"Our documentary resonates with folks because it shows the power ordinary, everyday people have when they come together in their communities to collectively defend public services and democratic rights," says Amie Williams.
The Ottawa screenings conclude the first leg of a cross-Canada tour, organized by Public Services International and the Council of Global Unions in support of the Quality Public Services-Action Now Campaign.
Amie Williams and Rachel Friedman will be available for media interviews in Ontario from October 11 to October 15. A full media kit is available for download at .
The film will be shown in English with French subtitles.
