Cliffside Mansion, Land Bordering New River Trail Park to Sell at Auction
(firmenpresse) - GALAX, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/09/12 -- Cliffside Mansion, an elegant Victorian home built in 1902, will sell at auction Friday, Nov. 9, along with 216 acres of land bordering the New River Trail Park and Chestnut Creek. The home was built by Thomas L. Felts, founder of the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, which had a colorful history of chasing bank and train robbers in the early 1900s.
"Much of this estate is just like it was more than a century ago. The mansion, numerous cottages and barns have been well maintained," said Jim Woltz, president of , which will conduct the auction.
The home on approximately 8.1 acres will sell as a single tract that also includes two cottages and three barns, one of which has a gym and an indoor basketball court. The other land and additional cottages and barns will sell in 16 tracts.
"There's a lot of variety in this property, including woodland, open land and building sites. There's also a significant amount of frontage on the park, as well as Chestnut Creek. Bidders will be able to make offers for the property in any combination, or as an entirety. For example, someone might want to use the mansion and cottages for a bed & breakfast or venue for weddings and other special events," said Woltz.
Felts, who built the home as his personal residence, was a partner in the detective agency that conducted investigative work for railroads and mining companies to maintain law and order in still-wild parts of the country. He went on to become president of First National Bank of Galax and to be elected to the Virginia Senate.
The real estate auction will begin at noon at the home, located at 506 Cliffview Road, Galax. The antiques and furnishings from the mansion and cottages will sell at auction starting at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 and 9. The homes, cottages and barns will be open for inspections on Sunday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 3.
