Professional Institute Cancels its Annual General Meeting in St. John's, Newfoundland in Support of Striking UCTE Workers
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/05/12 -- The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), in keeping with its fundamental principles as a labour organization, has cancelled plans to hold its upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) in St. John's, Newfoundland. This significant event, which was to have been held November 16 and 17 2012, would have seen some 700 participants enjoy the city's legendary hospitality and contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the local economy this year. The AGM will instead be held in the National Capital Region in the weeks ahead.
This decision was taken by the Institute's Board of Directors in solidarity with members of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE) employed at St. John's International Airport, who are affiliated with the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). These workers have been without a contract or a pay increase since 2009 and are currently staging a legal strike at the facility.
"This is a very difficult situation for our UCTE colleagues and we feel it is critical for us to take a stand in their support", said PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "Public sector workers are under attack across the country these days, and the Airport Authority has to realize the serious consequences of its intransigence. Not only does its refusal to offer employees a fair contract affect workers and travellers, it has a very real impact on local businesses and on the community as a whole. The Authority should put the interests of the people and of the city it serves ahead of the bottom line", concluded Corbett.
The Institute's Board of Directors is taking all necessary steps to ensure that alternative arrangements being made to conduct the 93rd annual meeting of the Institute's supreme governing body will respect the fiscal prudence that members expect from PIPSC.
More information about the revised location and dates of the AGM will be communicated as they become available.
