Media Release: Eight Young Performing Artists Awarded $10,000 Grants
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/01/12 -- Eight young performing artists will receive grants of $10,000 each this year from The Hnatyshyn Foundation to pursue their studies in September 2012. This brings to $620,000 the amount awarded in university-level scholarships over the past five years by the Ottawa-based foundation.
In announcing the winners of the 2012 Developing Artists Grants adjudication in Ottawa today, Gerda Hnatyshyn, C.C., President and Chair of the Board of The Hnatyshyn Foundation, said: "The nominees for 2012 represent the depth of talent and perseverance that can be found in Canada's young performing artists. The Hnatyshyn Foundation is privileged to celebrate their accomplishments by awarding these grants, investing in and supporting, at the most fundamental level, the development of world-class artists of tomorrow." The grant winners were adjudicated anonymously by expert juries from among applicants nominated by educational and training institutions across Canada.
Jessy Je Young Kim, of Vancouver, BC, receives the classical music grant for orchestral instrument (strings). An 18 year-old violinist, she will be studying at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music where she begins the first year of Bachelor of Music degree this fall.
The classical piano grant is awarded to 18 year-old Bryn Patrick Wiley of Calgary, AB. He began the first year of a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance at Schulich School of Music of McGill University this September.
The winner of the Oscar Peterson Grant for Jazz Performance is Sam Dickinson, a 20-year-old guitar player from Toronto, who will enter his third year in the Bachelor of Music Jazz Studies degree program at Humber College this autumn.
The classical ballet grant goes to 16 year-old Yoshiko Kamikusa of Vancouver, BC, who will be undertaking a full-time ballet program with the Goh Ballet of Canada in Vancouver.
The graduate grant for classical vocal performance is awarded to Betty Allison is a 30-year-old Soprano from Ladysmith, BC who will continue her Professional Studies with renowned voice teacher, Timothy Noble at the Jacobs School of Music, University of Indiana.
The French theatre acting grant goes to Sasha-Emmanuelle Migliarese, a 24-year-old student at College Lionel-Groulx in Ste-Therese, QC who will enter her final year of studies this autumn. The French theatre acting grant is funded by CIBC.
Edmund Stapleton, aged 25, of Paradise, NL is the winner of the Developing Artist Grant for English theatre acting. He will commence his final year of drama studies at the University of Alberta this fall. The English theatre acting grant is funded by CIBC.
The winner for contemporary dance is 20 year-old Colby McGovern of Grande Prairie, AB. He has just completed his first year of the Professional Training Program at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre.
The Hnatyshyn Foundation is a private charity established by the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, Canada's twenty-fourth Governor General. Its programs are funded by donations from government, foundations, corporations and individuals. The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided nearly $2.4 million in matching funds to the Foundation.
