Keflavik International Airport Expects Bright Future After Previous Success

According to Gudny Johannsdottir, Business and Route Development Manager at Isavia, the company operating Keflavik International Airport, passenger traffic at the Iceland airport is expected to increase further throughout 2012 and into 2013.
"Following the wake of the economical crash in Iceland, passenger numbers at KEF have been on the increase. It's believed that the reasoning for this increase is due to developments in Iceland, increased capacity of flights, cultural events, and the Inspired by Iceland tourism campaign," explained Johannsdottir.
In fact, the airport has registered a higher than expected passenger increase for the first six months of 2012, with 3.2 percent more passengers travelling through KEF than previously predicted.
Arriving passenger numbers have already increased by 14.4 percent in comparison to those of 2011, with visitors arriving at KEF from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and North America. Additionally, departing passengers have increased by 12.2 percent.
"This increase in passenger numbers over the past two years is a clear indicator that a new growing season of passenger traffic has begun. It has also been gratifying to observe how well received the new airlines and routes have been alongside many new passengers at KEF," commented Johannsdottir further.
The airport in Iceland has also received new scheduled carriers EasyJet, Norwegian, WOW Air, and Primera Air. Airlines Icelandair, and SAS, have also increased their flight capacity.
In 2011, KEF was awarded as the 'Best Airport in Europe' for the 2011 season as part of the Airports Service Quality Awards, conducted by the Airports Council International (ACI). This prestigious title is based on the ACI's extensive airport service survey published quarterly and annually with 186 major airports worldwide taking part -- KEF was crowned number one in the catergory 'best airport for 2 million passengers or less' for exceptional customer service. KEF actually came out on top in terms of service, but since it was placed in the smaller airports category, was not able to come out on top overall.
Furthermore, Johannsdottir will be discussing future airline routes and business incentives at KEF during the World Route Development Strategy Summit 2012 between September 30th and October 1st, 2012 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, as Isavia is looking to expand the airport's network with new routes and customers who contribute to passenger growth.
An airline that initiates a new route, which is not presently connected by regular flights from Keflavik International Airport, will benefit from discounts on the Landing Charge and Passenger Charge. The proposed route is one that will increase the network coverage and passenger traffic volumes and is one that has a commercial benefit to KEF.
Isavia offers a passenger increase bonus to reward airlines contributing to passenger growth for KEF. The bonus is 800 ISK per departing international passenger during IATA Summer Season (excluding June, July, August) and 1600 ISK during the IATA Winter Season, based on the number of passengers for which passenger charge is payable. The company being invoiced passenger charges for the flight (aircraft owner, subsidiary aircraft operator) is the beneficiary for receiving the bonus.
