(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/28/12 -- Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and officials from Red River College celebrated the grand opening of the Centre for Non-Destructive Inspection Technologies (CNDI) at Magellan Aerospace.

"Our Government recognizes that innovation and advanced technology is vital to Canada's economic growth," said Minister Yelich. "The technology available at this facility is crucial to enhancing productivity in one of Manitoba's key manufacturing sectors. Our Government's investment is playing a major role in helping local companies operate more efficiently and remain competitive in their industry."

Western Economic Diversification Canada invested to help Red River College establish non-destructive inspection capability in Manitoba. CNDI is a collaboration between government, education, and industry and is located on the College's Industrial Campus at Magellan Aerospace.

"One of the key themes of Red River College's strategic plan is to fuel Manitoba's economic growth and community development," said Stephanie Forsyth, President of Red River College. "By partnering with the federal government and Magellan Aerospace on the creation of CNDI, we're helping spark innovation within the aerospace sector and giving researchers and students access to state-of-the-art inspection equipment."

CNDI provides a competitive advantage for the manufacturing sector in Manitoba while addressing the industry demand for skilled inspection staff. Manufacturers and industry as a whole have access to the facility and Red River College students are in the unique position of being trained to use this leading edge technology.

"At Magellan, CNDI is integral in meeting the demanding production schedule and quality requirements for the manufacture of the composite components that comprise the next-generation F-35 aircraft", said Don Boitson, Vice President and General Manager of Magellan Aerospace. "The productivity enhancements, when compared to other traditional methods of inspection are significant. A component that would take 8 hours to inspect using conventional methods can take as little as 1 hour to inspect utilizing Laser UT. The benefits provided through this technology are considerable in terms of efficiencies to both cost and schedule. We are more than pleased to be part of this unique enterprise that supports industry and advances education in our community."
