PPSC Annual Report Tabled in Parliament
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/27/12 -- The Director of Public Prosecutions, Brian Saunders, today announced the tabling in Parliament of the Annual Report 2011-2012 of the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. The report covers the period of April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012.
In 2011-2012, the PPSC worked on 78,698 files. This includes 48,140 new files and 30,558 carried over from previous years. The PPSC continues to see a substantial number of high-complexity files that can require a tremendous amount of PPSC resources. Drug trafficking and regulatory prosecutions still represent a high proportion of the organization's caseload.
"This report showcases the significant work undertaken by PPSC staff over the last year in all aspects of federal prosecutions," said Mr. Saunders. "PPSC staff can be proud of their important role in Canada's criminal justice system."
The PPSC is responsible for prosecuting offences under federal statutes and for providing prosecution-related legal advice to law enforcement agencies. As of March 31, 2012, the organization had 988 employees. The PPSC also retains the services of 492 private-sector lawyers, as standing agents in hundreds of communities across Canada.
