Football Foods Take Over Sunday
Seamless Finds Wing Orders Spike by 72% on Football Sundays
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 09/27/12 -- On any given Sunday, screams of delight or grumbles of frustration can be heard as First Downs and Personal Fouls fill NFL stadiums across the country. When they can't be at the game in person, Americans turn to classic football foods to fill the void as they watch from the comfort of their living rooms. Seamless (), the leading mobile and online service for ordering delivery and takeout food from more than 11,000 top restaurants in the U.S. and U.K., found that on football Sundays, orders of wings, mozzarella sticks and nachos spike, with the running away with the day, driving up to 72% more orders, as compared to the rest of the week.
Chicago and Philadelphia go long on the wings, while Washington, D.C., and San Francisco bet big on pizza. The largest pizza order on a football Sunday last season was for $634.74 -- that's about 40 large pies! What's more, New Yorkers prefer "Big Blue" (cheese) for their wings, almost twice as much as ranch, while D.C.-residents flip a coin on ranch or blue cheese.
"Both football and food are true social connectors and can serve as a real bonding opportunity whether you're with fellow fans or opposing ones," said Jonathan Zabusky, CEO of Seamless. "Wings are the ultimate equalizer -- you'll only fight about who gets the last one. That lines up perfectly for our mobile apps. Since people don't want to miss a minute of the game, they can order directly from their couch and catch every play. We see this in the numbers when on peak weekend days, nearly 35% of order volume is mobile."
While the U.S. is thoroughly divided on the teams they love, everyone agrees that wings are America's favorite Sunday football treat. And in terms of heat level, mild, medium and spicy are all tied for number one! A riff on the American classic, boneless orders are on the rise. They made up 26% of all wing orders last year. And despite what people may think of the American diet, 5 is the most popular number of wings ordered, followed by 10 and 20.
Possibly even more surprising is another item that sees an increase every football Sunday -- Gatorade. Just like their favorite players, fans across the country are making sure to hydrate for game day. Seamless sees Gatorade orders increase by 68% on Sundays, as compared to the rest of the week.
"It's exciting to be a part of the Sunday tradition, making it easier for people to order the food they love, so they don't have to sacrifice a second of the game," said Zabusky.
