Addition of 5GHz Support Delivers Nearly 3X Greater Performance Over Previous Generation iPhones

(firmenpresse) - THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/27/12 -- Xirrus®, the leader in high-performance wireless access, today announced results of initial testing on the new iPhone 5 that demonstrate significantly higher Wi-Fi performance compared to previous iPhone models. Tests of the dual-band (5GHz and 2.4GHz) iPhone 5 running the iOS 6 operating system showed a 277-percent performance increase in Wi-Fi upload performance.

The performance improvement is achieved primarily by the addition of 5GHz Wi-Fi band support in the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 operates at a maximum Wi-Fi data rate of 150Mbps with its support for the 5GHz band, compared to the iPhone 4S at a maximum data rate of 65Mbps in the 2.4GHz band. In the tests performed, it took only nine seconds to upload a 100-megabyte file from an iPhone 5 operating in 5GHz, compared with 25 seconds with an iPhone 4S operating in 2.4GHz. The 5GHz band has seven times the bandwidth compared with the 2.4GHz band (21 usable channels compared with 3), and typically encounters much less interference from non-Wi-Fi devices (microwave ovens, Bluetooth, etc.) that can impede performance.

"We're very pleased with the outcome of our initial testing of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 -- not only because they benefit Xirrus customers using Apple devices in the workplace, but also because it confirms our position that 5GHz is a critical catalyst for Wi-Fi replacing wired as the preferred access choice," said Tim Thornton, Senior Director of Product Management. "Unlike conventional two-radio access points which are fixed with one 2.4GHz radio and one 5GHz radio, our Wireless Arrays support 2, 4, 8, 12, or 16 modular APs -- each capable of operating in either 5GHz or 2.4GHz. This makes the Array the ideal choice as the new 5GHz iPhones start to show up in larger numbers, since it can be dynamically reconfigured to adapt to the changing mix of clients supporting 5GHz."

Thornton concluded by saying, "The smartphone has been the last mainstream device that operated primarily in 2.4GHz. We know 5GHz is the future for Wi-Fi, and this was reconfirmed by Apple's leadership in the design of the iPhone 5. Xirrus has the only architecture capable of supporting this shift to 5GHz without a forklift upgrade of existing APs."
