Supporting Sustainable Energy Solutions and the Biofuel Manufacturing Industry
NRC to Fly World's First Civil Aircraft Powered by 100% Bio Jet Fuel
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/20/12 -- As part of National Biotechnology Week, business and government leaders gathered with experts today at the National Research Council of Canada's (NRC) biofuel flight test facility to applaud the aviation biofuel initiative. A major step towards advancing sustainable sources of renewable energy, bio jet fuel could help grow new Canadian markets and support rural economies for Canadian farmers.
"We are pleased to be partnering with innovative firms like Agrisoma Biosciences Inc. and Applied Research Associates that support the economy by developing and bringing to market effective energy solutions", said Dr. Roman Szumski, Vice-President for Life Sciences at the National Research Council of Canada. "This is a perfect example of how industry and government work together to bridge the gap between Canadian innovation and commercialization."
The Resonance™ brand industrial oilseed crop used to make the biofuel is uniquely suited for production in semi-arid regions, making its cultivation ideal in the southern Prairies. This year, more than 40 commercial growers in Western Canada have been contracted to grow over 6,000 acres of the oilseed crop that will be used to create 100 percent bio jet fuel.
"NRC's expertise across many technology areas and their first class flight research services are helping us complete the validation cycle of Resonance™ brand Brassica carinta," said Dr. Steven Fabijanski, President and CEO of Agrisoma Biosciences. "The upcoming 100 percent biofuel flight will showcase Resonance-based biofuels as a viable alternative for the aviation industry."
"ARA's game-changing technology is allowing the transformation of carinata oil into a jet fuel that meets all of the specifications of petroleum-based fuel", said Chuck Red, Alternative Fuels Lead with Applied Research Associates. "Through this initiative, we provide a sustainable option for reducing aviation emissions."
The 100 percent bio jet fuel will soon be tested in flight for engine performance and emissions, with the help of the NRC's Falcon 20 twin engine jet and the T-33 aircraft. This will be the first time a jet aircraft is powered by 100 percent, un-blended, renewable jet fuel that meets petroleum jet fuel specifications.
This aviation biofuel initiative is funded by the National Research Council of Canada, Agrisoma Biosciences Inc., Applied Research Associates, the Government of Canada's Clean Transportation Initiatives and the Green Aviation Research and Development Network (GARDN).
