Bay Area Professionals Offer Obama Supporters an Extra Way to Get Involved
(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/19/12 -- Yard Sale for Obama, the grassroots fundraising campaign developed by a group of Bay Area professionals, today announced its Yard Sale for Obama, a national event to take place online and in yards across this country on September 22 - 23. The event will bring together supporters who want to further contribute to President Obama's re-election campaign by donating what they make from the sale of things they no longer need.
Participants in the Yard Sale grab something they aren't using anyway and sell it (online via Craigslist, Ebay, getyardsale.com or old school-style in their front yard), then contribute to President Obama's re-election by making a donation on the event's on barackobama.com. "We talked to young people we knew. They'd already donated dollars and time to the campaign, but still wanted to give more," says Sean Dabel, the creator of the event. "None of our friends could themselves write a million dollar check, but we thought -- wait, I have stuff sitting around that I'm not using and could do with getting rid of -- what if we sold it and had extra dollars to donate to Obama's re-election? We wondered what might happen if we all banned together and did the same thing - could we raise a million dollars? We started putting things in motion from there."
To get the word out, the grassroots team uses social media, a growing network of event co-hosts, or social promoters across the country, and including one that features . "Sending a bobble head of President Obama 100,000 feet into space was totally needed," said Dabel. "Grassroots campaign fundraising poses a unique challenge -- there is no marketing budget to play with. Fortunately this sort of obstacle is familiar to our team who works in and around the tech and startup scene here in the Bay Area. We're also encouraged by the improvements in the social media, technology and E-commerce landscapes since the last election -- it's easier to get the word out by 'pinning' and 'tweeting' and easier to sell stuff you no longer need online."
