Governor General to Visit Abitibi-Temiscamingue
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/13/12 -- Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will visit Abitibi-Temiscamingue on September 17 and 18, 2012, during one of their regional visits taking them across the country to meet Canadians.
"This visit will give me the opportunity to honour some of the citizens of Val-d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda who have distinguished themselves through their altruism and involvement in their community," the Governor General stated. "As commander-in-chief, I will also be meeting with members of the Canadian Forces who are in the region to take part in a search and rescue exercise."
The various engagements planned will allow Their Excellencies to learn more about the issues facing the citizens of that part of Abitibi-Temiscamingue and to discover some of the successful initiatives coming out of these communities.

CARING CANADIAN AWARD RECIPIENTS AND CITATIONS
Created in 1995, the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens. Marielle Montreuil and Jacqueline Gaignard
Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec
For nearly 25 years, Marielle Montreuil and Jacqueline Gaignard have been providing moral and tangible support to the families of Abitibi-Temiscamingue whose lives have been affected by Alzheimer's disease. Founders of the regional Alzheimer Society of Rouyn-Noranda, they have become the resource people with respect to this disease, informing, orienting and educating those living with Alzheimer's, their families, and health professionals. Their perseverance has given hope to hundreds of people affected by this disease.
Jean-Charles Coutu
Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec
Since 1962, Jean-Charles Coutu has been dedicated to his community. He is, notably, a founding member of the Conseil de Bien-Etre de Rouyn-Noranda, which works to improve the quality of education and health care services in the community, and he was instrumental in the creation of a psychiatric care facility serving northwestern Quebec. Also engaged in the cultural development of his region, Mr. Coutu has been a driving force behind several community festivals including, among others, the Festival des guitares du monde de l'Abitibi-Temiscamingue.
Guy Boisvert
Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec
For more than 40 years, Guy Boisvert has generously given of his time to a number of causes. He was founding president of a minor league hockey club, long-time member of the Optimists Club and, more recently, president of the Club de l'age d'or d'Evain. For years, he has been the organizer behind community social events, leading various teams of volunteers, to raise funds for charitable causes. Mr. Boisvert's community spirit, energy and engagement are an inspiration to his peers.
Georges Michaud
Val-d'Or, Quebec
For many years, Georges Michaud has engaged in the life of his community, including as president of the recreational committee of the Club de l'age d'or de Val-Senneville (now amalgamated with Val-d'Or). He also served as commander of the Air Cadets' 728 Squadron La Verendrye de Val-d'Or. More recently, Mr. Michaud has been involved with the organization of the Salon des generations de l'Abitibi-Temiscamingue.
Marcelle Sweet
Val-d'Or, Quebec
A teacher by profession, Marcelle Sweet has helped to expand the horizons of the citizens of Val-d'Or through her leadership of initiatives that promote education, the arts and, most of all, music. She is a member of the Friends of the Conservatoire de musique de Val-d'Or and the president of the Societe d'art lyrique de l'Abitibi-Temiscamingue. Now retired, Ms. Sweet teaches English as a second language at the Reseau libre savoir and hosts TV programs in her region.
