Openet-Sponsored Study Confirms That as the Industry Moves to LTE, Operators Need a Sophisticated, Real-Time Approach to Mobile Data Billing
(firmenpresse) - DUBLIN, IRELAND -- (Marketwire) -- 09/12/12 -- , a global leader of real-time transaction management software for network operators, today announced the results of wide-reaching industry research regarding the future of mobile data billing. A key take away from the survey was the need for a real-time approach to mobile data billing, expressed by more than 90 percent of respondents. Only 20 percent of operators surveyed currently have the real-time capabilities.
The research, conducted by the telecom intelligence firm, Informa, incorporates the input of more than 200 mobile operators worldwide.
Mobile operators reported that maximizing revenue from data service requires more sophisticated pricing and billing systems, and strategies. Almost 80 percent of respondents indicated their existing post-paid billing system did not provide real-time data collection and rating capabilities. Nearly 90 percent said these capabilities were important.
"Advanced Policy and Charging Control (PCC) systems can work with legacy investments so that operators can evolve without needing to rip and replace existing billing systems," said Chris Hoover, Openet VP Marketing. "Openet has helped operators worldwide control Opex while providing real-time capabilities necessary to improve customer experience, comply with regulation and launch innovative services."
Determining how to price and bill for data services is perhaps the most pressing issue facing mobile operators today. As the industry moves from 3G to LTE -- and networks designed for data services and devices rather than voice services -- it is becoming more apparent that mobile data billing needs to quickly evolve from its current form.
The research confirms that network controls are essential to creating new charging options and greater diversity in network controls. Pricing and billing strategies cannot be achieved without the availability of real-time data to the billing system and the integration of that real-time data with policy infrastructure.
