ID: 1148796

(firmenpresse) - WINDSOR, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/06/12 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, accompanied by Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, today announced the construction of a new building in Windsor, Ontario to support the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces. This significant infrastructure investment will enable the Naval Reserve Division to better perform their duties and contribute to the overall defence of Canada.

"Our Government is committed to ensuring the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces have the modern infrastructure they need to meet the challenges of the 21st century," said Minister MacKay. "At the same time, these projects benefit the Canadian economy through the creation of a large number of local jobs."

The HMCS Hunter Naval Reserve project involves the construction of a 5805m2 integrated facility in Mill Cove on the Detroit River which will provide accommodation for HMCS Hunter and up to three cadet corps. The facility will be large enough to support 250 personnel and will include a main building with a drill deck, classrooms, offices, messes, storage, a boat lift, and a boat shed.

"Investments such as this will create many jobs for workers in the local area," said Member of Parliament Jeff Watson. "I am confident that our Government's investment will help bolster the local economy and greatly benefit our Canadian Forces."

The Naval Reserve supports the Royal Canadian Navy by generating and sustaining highly-trained and combat-capable personnel to fulfill its mission and contribute to the overall defence of Canada. Implementation of this project will enable the unit to effectively train its members in facilities that meet functional and safety requirements. By providing a state of the art nautical environment, the Naval Reserve Division will be able to increase recruitment and enhance its profile in the community. It will also allow the Naval Reserve Division to operate more effectively by reducing overall training costs.

In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. A contract, valued at approximately CAN$15.7 million, has been awarded to PCR Contractor, Inc. of Windsor, Ontario for the construction of this new facility. Approximately 85 jobs will be generated as a result of the construction work.

The Government of Canada has conducted and will continue to conduct open, fair, and transparent competitive processes to award contracts associated with these infrastructure projects.
