Adli Law Group, P.C. Announces Angelina Jolie Denies Allegations in Copyright Infringement Case
(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/06/12 -- On September 4, Angelina Jolie answered the complaint filed by Author Josip J. Knezevic, professionally known as , who alleges that the film ," written, directed and co-produced by Jolie, infringes on his book "The Soul Shattering." Adli Law Group, P.C., the law firm representing Braddock, reports that Jolie denies Braddock's allegations of copyright violation and states that she made the film without use of the story in Braddock's book.
In July, the infringement case filed against Angelina Jolie, GK Films, FilmDistrict Distribution, Scout Films and Edin Sarkic, was transferred from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles, Calif. at the request of Jolie.
"This was originally filed in Illinois, but Ms. Jolie challenged the jurisdiction of that court and requested transfer to Los Angeles because of the case's stronger connections to Southern California. The Illinois judge agreed. With this answer, the case gets formally off the ground," says President of Dr. Dariush Adli, who specializes in litigation in the areas of patent, trademark and copyright. "The next stage is discovery, where we will inquire into Ms. Jolie's and her studio's access to Mr. Braddock's book and the use of the book's story in the movie," adds Mr. Rasheed McWilliams, a partner at Adli Law.
Braddock alleges that Jolie copied the essential elements of his book, including the characters, plot lines and scenes, when she was doing research for her in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Jolie's parties state "that the protectable elements of the motion picture and the book entitled 'The Soul Shattering' are legally or substantially similar under controlling Ninth Circuit law." They also admit "they did not receive licensing or permission from the plaintiff, but deny they were legally required to obtain licensing or permission from the plaintiff."
