As of late August 2012, a total of 1,590 cases of West Nile virus were reported in the United States, including 66 deaths. According to Reuters, this represents the highest human toll reported by that point in the calendar since the mosquito-borne disease was first detected in the country in 1999. Transmitted by common house mosquitoes, West Nile Virus has no treatment or vaccine.
