(firmenpresse) - Tom Strala is willful and uncompromising. An architect who eludes movements, fashion, and the needs of markets, and takes his own direction. The approach is intellectual, the result sensual. The first time this was proven by his „TMS“-lights that had been displayed in all magazines, and which are different to everything else one had seen before. The TMS’s are at the same time strict mini architecture and poetic sculpture.
This combination is felt for the new object „Ponte“ as well. „To me it is about desire, power, and sap, not about lifeless brittleness“, says the designer about the object. The base is a framework of massive oak wood elements, the table top is made of clear glass. Tom Strala about his design: „The legs are angular to carry the table’s weight, but this does not describe the actual power of it. The construction can be taken apart which is useful, but is not defining the style of the table. It could remind of the feeling of creating -like a child experiences when playing with Lego-, but that is not what this object is about.
The table top is clear safety glass. But all this high quality is not interesting to me. More important to me the appearance of the clear glass that supports the composed power of table best possible.“
The table is available in two sizes (270 and 310 cm length) and is produced in small series. With only 6 screws the base frame can be mounted. Difference to the lights and other objects of Strala is that Ponte is the first object which will be unlimited available. A product in which construction becomes art.

Tom Strala was born in 1974 in Schaffhausen. 2001 he finished the master of architecture at the ETH Zurich. After his study he went on a scholarship trip to Brazil (Erich Degen Foundation - Topic: 'The built belief in a better world'). He begins to break with traditional ways. Consistent and playful at the same time, he is looking for own ideas. In the same year Tom Strala founded the design atelier STRALA. Over the last few years, Strala has been painstakingly creating a unique collection of objects d’art exclusively invented, handcrafted and offered in limited editions. An idea is not a question of luck it is a process. In 2006 his “tms360” was internationally recognized as the ‘European Luminary of the Year ’. In 2007 Tom Strala acted as the jury president for the first ‘Innovation and Design Award’ in Zurich. Since 2008 STRALA is organized as a limited company. STRALA’s objects are exclusively available at the gallery in the Dufourstrasse in Zurich.
