Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee welcomes Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary-General for Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women to Montreal on September 5, 2012.
Ms. Puri will be in Montreal for the first week of September to attend the Civicus World Assembly, a global gathering for civil society, donors, governments and businesses to find common solutions to the challenges facing humanity. She will be accompanied by Ms. Kristin Hetle, Director of Strategic Partnerships for UN Women. Ms. Puri will be participating in a panel discussing social innovation and alternate forms of development. The UN Women Canada National Committee would like to welcome these exemplary women to Canada, and provide an opportunity to freely discuss and exchange ideas concerning issues of gender equality and women's empowerment.

During the visit of Ms. Puri, UN Women Canada National Committee is pleased to co-host the informal luncheon with Francoise E. Lyon, Senior Vice President of Pembroke Private Wealth Management, at Mount Royal Club in Montreal from 12:00 to 2:00pm.
Subsequent panel discussion, hosted by the UN Women Canada National Committee McGill Club, will be held at McGill University from 4:30pm to 7:00pm at Chancellor Day Hall, Room 100 (Moot Court).

About Ms. Lakshmi Puri
Ms. Puri joined the United Nations in 2002, after a successful 28 year career with the Indian Foreign Service. In the areas of development, human rights, and peace and security, Ms. Puri has worked tirelessly for gender equality and women's empowerment. Ms. Puri has served a variety of roles within the United Nations, among them; Director of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Division of International Trade in Goods, Services and Commodities; UNCTAD's Acting Deputy Secretary-General; and Director at the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States. In 2011, she was appointed Assistant Secretary-General for Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships at UN Women by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
