Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee, to Be Honoured With a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee will be presented with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Honourable Senator Mobina S.B. Jaffer in Montreal on September 5, 2012. Ms. Jiwani has been selected as a recipient of the award by virtue of her tireless efforts and contributions towards gender equality and human rights within Canada and abroad.

Ms. Jiwani will be presented with the medal at a UN Women Canada National Committee luncheon attended by an elite assembly of influential Canadian leaders, in addition to high-level visiting United Nations dignitaries including Ms. Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary-General for Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women.

Ms. Jiwani has traveled the world as a champion for gender equality, addressing many powerful individuals, including 400 parliamentarians from 42 different countries. Through perseverance and determination, she has made significant contributions towards social change, lending her voice to the call for progress to achieve equal gender rights within domestic and economic spheres worldwide.

In addition to receiving this most recent accolade, Ms. Jiwani has been appointed a Global Ambassador of Peace by the Universal Federation of Peace. She is a proud recipient of the Canadian Governor General's Award, the International Humanitarian Award from the Government of Uganda, a commemorative stamp in her likeness and the Government of Greece has inducted her into their Women's Hall of Fame.

Her international experience and advocacy for gender equality and women's economic empowerment is laudable," said Senator Jaffer. "It is my great privilege to present her with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her many exceptional contributions and achievements."

The commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
