Part Two of Popular New Orleans Serial Novel Commemorates Hurricane Katrina, Reinterprets City's Fraught Legacy of Slavery, Civil Rights
(firmenpresse) - NEW ORLEANS, LA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/28/12 -- Seven years after Hurricane Katrina pounded and flooded New Orleans, and with Hurricane Isaac now beating a remarkably similar path toward the Gulf Coast, on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 local publisher River House Publishing will release Part 2 of "The Coffee Shop Chronicles of New Orleans." "Like so much of the art and literature coming out of New Orleans these days, CSCNOLA was reshaped by Katrina, which made our city stronger and even more spirited," commented publisher Csaba Lukács. "We're a city of survivors, of people who, by and large, choose to be here."
Part 1 of the novel, released in mid-2010, has become a local hit and spent months on the Amazon Kindle Store's "Top 10 Historical Fiction Books by Reader Review." The novel is carried by numerous local shops as well as Books-A-Million, Barnes & Noble, and Hudson. It was chosen by the New Orleans Times-Picayune as a "Hot Read" and earned a spot on New Orleans magazine's "Read and Spin" fiction list. The book's many accolades include "blurbs" from authors Andrei Codrescu and Tom Carson, and its author, David Lummis, has been interviewed on NPR affiliate WWNO and New Orleans' jazz and heritage station, WWOZ.
While at times veering into comedy, the novel also delves deeply into serious topics including antebellum slavery and lynching during the Jim Crow era. Part 2 examines New Orleans figures and events including Charles Deslondes and the 1811 German Coast slave uprising, Robert Charles and the riots of 1900, and Mark Essex and his 1972 siege on the city from atop the downtown Howard Johnson's, as well as milestone civil rights victories of the 1960s and 1970s, including Ernest "Dutch" Morial's 1977 run for mayor.
Although CSCNOLA is Lummis's first novel, he is a writer by trade and a nationally known consumer market analyst. After publishing Part 1, he met consulting editor Sarah Flynn, whose editorial guidance has enriched Part 2. As a manuscript editor at Houghton Mifflin, Flynn worked with Pat Conroy on "The Prince of Tides." She is also co-author of "Voices of Freedom: An Oral History of the Civil Rights Movement from the 1950s through the 1980s," a companion volume to the award-winning documentary "Eyes on the Prize."
