A Clinical Trial Indicates That Desensitization May Help Reduce Egg Allergies; Jesse Stoff, Immunologist, Asserts That This Finding Has the Potential to Improve the Safety and Quality of Life for Kids Who Suffer From This Allergy

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 08/28/12 -- Allergies affect people of all ages, but they often emerge in children. One of the more common allergies is an egg allergy, which makes life particularly difficult for kids and their parents. With eggs present in nearly all baked goods and many other food items, avoiding them requires parents and children to thoroughly read ingredient labels and come up with creative new recipes to avoid use of this dairy product. But the results of a new clinical trial may change the severity of egg allergies. According to , research has shown that desensitization may serve to reduce and, in a few cases, eliminate egg allergies. , an immunologist, believes that this finding has the potential to improve the quality of life for kids and their parents.

The article asserts that the research, first published in New England Journal of Medicine, indicates that desensitization can alleviate or reduce egg allergies: "Researchers [...] report that 30 of the 40 egg-allergic children who ate small amounts of powdered egg white every day for 22 months became 'desensitized' and experienced little or no allergic reaction. After two years on the treatment, 11 of the 40 (28%) were able to freely incorporate egg products into their everyday diet with no problem."

The researchers assigned to this study concede that desensitization is "not a new finding"; however, they are exploring the ways in which it can be used to combat allergies while tracking long-term effects.

"Food allergies occur most frequently in children and cause a wide range of problems, including asthma, eczema, gastroenteritis, and behavioral issues," asserts Jesse Stoff. "The most common food allergies include those pertaining to dairy, wheat, corn, eggs, and soy. Treatment usually consists of avoidance and desensitization with subcutaneous immuno-therapy, or allergy shots. In Europe, desensitization with sub lingual immuno-therapy, or SLIT, has been available for years and has been under review by the FDA for approval in the United States. Now research shows that taking powered egg can work like SLIT to progressively desensitize the children in the study who were suffering from egg allergies. Since egg is commonly used in many prepared foods, this finding can potentially make life easier and safer for the one out of 13 children who suffer from this relatively common food allergy."

Stoff is interested to see how further research will add to these findings, which are promising. Given that there is no reliable treatment for food allergies, he believes that such research is crucial.
