Canada Provides Humanitarian Assistance in Response to Floods in the Philippines
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/15/12 -- Today, the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, announced that Canada is taking action to help those affected by floods caused by monsoon rains in the Philippines.
"Canada is deeply concerned about the devastation caused by the monsoon rains and its impact on the people of the Philippines," said Minister Fantino. "We are working with the (IFRC) and the to ensure that concrete steps are taken to alleviate suffering and ensure the immediate and ongoing needs of those affected are met."
In response to the floods, Canada is supporting IFRC and Philippine Red Cross efforts in the affected regions. These efforts include providing food and other relief items, as well as supporting disease prevention and health education, and making sure that people remaining in evacuation centres have water.
The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure basic human needs are met and provide further assistance if required.

Canada's response to monsoon flooding in the Philippines
In response to the flooding in Manila and neighbouring provinces, Canada is providing $50,000 to help the more than 3.4 million people affected to date. This support will help the , through the , to meet immediate and long-term needs by providing drinking water, food, and other much-needed relief items, as well as to prevent disease and provide support to families.
CIDA, through its , aims to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain the dignity of those affected by conflicts and disasters by providing appropriate, timely and effective responses.
CIDA recently announced a new that will improve Canada's ability to provide assistance effectively and efficiently in times of humanitarian crises.
The partnership aims to strengthen national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in developing countries so that they are better able to respond to disasters and conflicts and to enhance Canada's ability to respond quickly.
