Dennis Bucko, Plastic Surgeon, Understands That Misconceptions Regarding Liposuction Abound; He Refutes These Myths, Providing Reliable Information to Patients Who Are Considering This Procedure

(firmenpresse) - SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/15/12 -- Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that has proven highly popular among men and women looking to achieve a slimmer appearance. , knows that people are curious about how such a procedure will affect their bodies. Unfortunately, misconceptions about this particular operation abound. He is refuting these misconceptions by highlighting the findings of a recent study conducted by Eric Swanson, MD, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the study asserts that fat cells do not return to sites that undergo liposuction. The Wall Street Journal that the study has confirmed that "fat cells neither return to treated areas nor get redistributed to untreated areas of the body after liposuction."

According to the article, this study comes on the heels of a report in Obesity, which asserts that fat cells do, indeed, redistribute around other areas of the body. In particular, this report indicates that the midsection, arms, and shoulders accumulate the redistributed cells. The article in Obesity sparked much concern regarding the, as of now, common procedure. The public, after decades of undergoing liposuction, began to wonder if it really did live up to its promise of removing unwanted fat cells.

Dr. Swanson, after conducting his study and refuting this misconception, states: "Previous studies have evaluated small numbers of patients and used imprecise measuring techniques, limiting their power to reliably detect changes. Our study included a sufficient number of patients and used precise measurements, making the conclusions highly reliable. Patients can be reassured that their improvements will last and they need not worry about putting weight back on disproportionately."

, applauds the work that Dr. Swanson has conducted. Additionally, he concurs with Dr. Swanson's reminder of the way in which liposuction should be regarded.

"Of course, liposuction does not change your ability to gain or lose weight," Dr. Swanson clarifies. "Its value is in permanently reducing the number of fat cells in problem areas. For any given weight you will be in the future, your proportions will be better after liposuction, barring extremes in weight gain."

Dr. Bucko hopes that Dr. Swanson's work gains the attention it needs to put damaging misconceptions regarding liposuction to rest.
