ID: 1141510

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/11/12 -- Save the Children welcomes the news that the Canadian government is giving aid to thousands of families fleeing the horrific violence in Syria. Today, a Canadian delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird visited a joint project run by Save the Children and UNICEF inside Za'atri camp for Syrian Refugees in Jordan. It is estimated that more than 1 million people in Syria are in desperate need of assistance and more than 130 000 refugees have fled to neighboring countries.

Patricia Erb, President & CEO Save the Children:

"For months Canadians and the world have watched as the situation for Syrian children has deteriorated. Children represent more than half of Syrians fleeing their country. They have been traumatized by the violence they have experienced, and although safe from the conflict, as refugees their lives are a daily struggle.

Save the Children has been working on the ground with Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. The needs are great which is why Canada's support for the humanitarian effort is crucial. We thank Minister Baird for coming to witness the challenging conditions faced by refugee children and their families and for the commitment of the Canadian government to address this humanitarian crisis."

Save the Children has spokespeople available in Jordan and Toronto.
