Truck Driver Shortage & Crackdown on Fatigued Driving Opens Opportunities for New Truckers

(firmenpresse) - HOUSTON, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 08/06/12 -- According to Truck Jobs Today, a national recruitment company specializing in , the number of employment opportunities for new truckers is growing. Although many fleet companies refused to hire inexperienced commercial drivers in the past, the continued truck driver shortage combined with a government crackdown on fatigued driving is forcing a large percentage of those companies to reconsider.

"We are seeing an increase in demand for new, inexperienced drivers, and expect the rate of that increase to grow much faster in the near future," says Christopher Grant, CEO of Truck Jobs Today.

A new report by the American Trucking Associations supports that expectation. According to the , most carriers surveyed said they cannot find enough experienced drivers to fill demand. Although 56 percent of fleets interviewed by the ATA said they do not hire inexperienced truck drivers, they are now considering it.

"The shortage of experienced truckers is not new," says Grant, "but concern over it is intensifying as the shortage results in more shipment delays while stricter limits are placed on trucker hours."

Efforts to reduce the number of accidents caused by fatigued drivers prompted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to revise its hours-of-service (HOS) safety requirements for commercial truck drivers and imposed stiff penalties for violators. Commercial drivers and companies must comply with the new rule by July 1, 2013. State officials are already cracking down on HOS violators. Improved coordination of inspection sites is helping to facilitate that crackdown.

"Carriers will be forced to offer or leave their fleets parked," says Grant. "They will do what is needed to keep shipments moving. If that means recruiting more drivers at the schools or hiring inexperienced truck drivers and training them, that's what they will do."
