The Development of Cone Beam Commuted Tomography Is Allowing Many Dentists to Improve Diagnosis and Root Canal Procedures in Patients; Noted Endodontist, Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. of Nashville, Explains How This New Technology Is Changing Dentistry

(firmenpresse) - NASHVILLE, TN -- (Marketwire) -- 08/06/12 -- For many endodontists, says Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. of Nashville, it can be difficult to diagnose dental problems that concern the soft tissue of the teeth, also known as the pulp. Such problems can require root canal procedures, but if not diagnosed correctly, a patient may have to undergo needless additional treatment. However, a recent from Utah's Standard-Examiner sheds light on a new 3-D scanning technology known as Cone Beam Commuted Tomography, or CBCT. It explains that the 3-D imaging is much more convenient than the similar technology of CT scans, and offers more detail than a standard X-ray currently used in most dental practices.

Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. notes that although root canals often make patients apprehensive, endodontic procedures are designed to relieve pain, protect teeth from further damage, and are generally pain free. The article explains that CBCT helps make the whole process a lot easier on patients and dentists. The device is smaller than a CT scanner, so patients can undergo the procedure in the dental office and get results in about 30 seconds.

Having fixed soft tissue problems experienced by several patients at his Nashville and Columbia practices, explains, "Cone beam radiography is most assuredly going to replace the traditional dental X-rays utilized today. There is just so much more information which can be acquired through study of the cone beam scans." Although the new technology allows for simplified and preventative diagnoses, the article notes that dental insurance providers are not quick to accept it.

The article says that while CBCT may not be included as a covered benefit with most policies, it can be well worth the cost. "With regard to endodontics, CBCT allows professionals to easily determine when canals are present which haven't been previously treated or when radicular pathosis is present," states Dr. Ronald Wright Jr. of Nashville. He notes that dental patients who choose this technology can expect to pay about $100 to $300 for the procedure, but Dr. Wright explains that this cost is significantly more preferable than what someone would have to pay for additional treatment, or undergo needless procedures and recovery, which results from improper diagnosis. The article states that additional and corrective root canal procedures can typically cost a patient can cost between $1,000 and $2,000.

"At this point in time, retreatment of a previous dentist's work is, unfortunately, necessary," Wright observes, "but with the relatively small price of CBCT 3-D imaging, a patient can avoid prolonged pain and discomfort and extend the life of their teeth."
