New German deep-sea research vessel “Sonne” supported by Werum’s DSHIP data management system / Easier and more economic handling of marine measurement data
Lueneburg, 2 August 2012 – The new German deep-sea research vessel, which succeeds the current “Sonne” research vessel, will be equipped with a DSHIP data management system by Werum Software & Systems AG. It is going to be the ninth large research vessel in Germany that employs Werum’s DSHIP. The vessel’s overall IT system is laid out for 40 scientists working on board, for which Werum also supplies the mail system and the scientific network.
Flexible management of marine measurement data
Werum’s data management system DSHIP will be in charge of acquiring, processing, visualizing and archiving the entire scientific measurement data arising on board the vessel. The scope of delivery also includes a dedicated on-shore archive system, which makes it possible for the scientific community to utilize the data collected during any research cruises to their full extent without accessing the actual ship systems on board. In addition to the software, Werum also supplies the required servers and workstations and integrates all scientific and nautical devices into the data management system.
DSHIP will be complemented by an e-mail management system to enable communication between vessel and on-shore station using different types of connections. It will be possible to prioritize e-mails for transfer and to define individual size limits for each mail account – an important feature when faced with expensive and sometimes really slow satellite transmission lines.
Werum designs and configures the scientific network with all its active components including routers and switches and puts it into operation. With the network it will be possible to integrate most diverse scientific measurement systems easily and swiftly.
Installation and start-up of the IT system will be carried out at Neptun Werft shipyard in Warnemuende, Germany, which is an affiliated company of German Meyer Werft shipbuilding company. Trial operation at sea is scheduled to take place in spring/summer 2014. The new ship is operated by RF Forschungsschiffahrt GmbH, the shipping company that also owns the present "Sonne" research vessel.
