Chicago Personal Injury Lawyers at Briskman Briskman & Greenberg Concerned About Local Hospital's Safety Record

Chicago's Sacred Heart Hospital has the nation's worst safety record for patients, according to Consumer Reports. The respected nonprofit organization has released its first-ever guide to the best and worst hospitals in the United States. Out of more than 1,000 hospitals the group studied, Sacred Heart ranked last, primarily due to a bloodstream infection rate more than twice the national standard.
Consumer Reports said that a 2010 report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services revealed that medical errors are a contributing factor in the deaths of up to 180,000 Medicare patients annually. The types of medical malpractice involved include infections and surgery errors.
Consumer Reports gathered information from hospitals in 44 states. The organization examined inspection procedures at hospitals and interviewed doctors, nurses and patients. Six different factors were considered in creating the group's list: infections, complications, safety communication, the time between a patient being discharged and returning to the hospital, over-exposure to radiation, and the death rate for patients with multiple conditions.
On the group's scale for patient safety, Sacred Heart Hospital scored only 16 out of 100 points. Dr. John Santa, the director of the study, said that the bloodstream infection rate was a major factor, but that Sacred Heart earned poor marks in all six areas studied. The Chicago hospital was also found to be prone to medical complications, such as patients suffering from falls or bedsores. In addition, patients were exposed to radiation through unnecessary CT scans.
Another Chicago hospital, Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, also scored in the bottom ten hospitals in the nation.
