The CAMRT and the CAR Welcomed From Innovation to Action, the Report of the Health Care Innovation Working Group of the Council of the Federation
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/27/12 -- The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) and the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) welcomed From Innovation to Action, the report of the Health Care Innovation Working Group (HCIWG) of the Council of the Federation (CoF) released on Thursday, July 26. The HCIWG was launched by Canada's premiers in January 2012 to study how the provinces and territories can improve the quality of care that Canadians receive and overall system performance through shared innovations in service delivery that provide better health, better care and better value.
"We are impressed with the working group's progress in identifying best practices that can be shared, adopted widely and have the capacity to transform patient care." said Amanda Bolderston, president of the CAMRT.
In particular, the CAMRT and the CAR applaud the announcement that the HCIWG will address the issue of appropriateness in diagnostic imaging in the next phase of its work. The two organizations have been working together with other members of the imaging team to advance better understanding of the complex issue of appropriateness among referring physicians, government officials and patients. The group recently celebrated Medical Imaging Team Day, May 18, 2012, with the launch of a paper entitled Appropriate Use of Medical Imaging in Canada.
Dr. James D. Fraser, president of the CAR, noted "Our research indicates that 10-20% of medical imaging tests may be unnecessary. Thus, the impact of the Council of the Federation's commitment to ensuring that patients are receiving the best care available based on up to date information by reviewing the appropriateness of certain tests and procedures is significant."
The two associations had collaborated on a formal recommendation to the CoF, outlining an approach to appropriate diagnostic imaging that is well-suited to broad adoption across the country and has potential to optimize health system performance with a "Triple Aim" result: better care for individuals, better health for populations, and lower per capita costs. Ms. Bolderston and Dr Fraser agreed that the Council's positive response to their suggestion is gratifying and readily offered the experience and expertise of their members to support the work of the HCIWG as it continues to address the transformation of the Canadian healthcare system through innovation.
