Missouri Baptist Medical Center Named First Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery in the Midwest
(firmenpresse) - ST. LOUIS, MO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/25/12 -- Missouri Baptist Medical Center today was designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the AAGL, the leading association of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons worldwide, and Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). The hospital and program director, Scott Biest, MD, are the first COEMIG designees in the Midwest.
Missouri Baptist's program provides women with innovative, minimally invasive surgical treatment options for hysterectomies, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, prolapse, and other gynecologic conditions.
"Compared to traditional surgery, patients who undergo minimally invasive gynecologic surgery experience less pain, reduced blood loss, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery, so they can return to normal activities sooner," said Dr. Biest. "This is why it's quickly becoming the preferred -- and often demanded -- treatment approach for many women throughout the U.S."
Founded in April 2011, Missouri Baptist's COEMIG program was the shared vision of Dr. Biest, director of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at both Missouri Baptist Medical Center and Washington University, and Dr. David Weinstein, chief of OB/GYN at Missouri Baptist. They wanted to create a center where women could receive quality medical care from certified gynecologic surgeons who specialize in the minimally invasive technique.
In addition to his surgical responsibilities, Dr. Biest proctors other gynecologists in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery as they train to earn their credentials.
"With Dr. Biest's guidance, our gynecologic surgeons routinely perform minimally invasive surgery, and also proctor other gynecologic specialists who are interested in becoming credentialed in this field," said Dr. Weinstein.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the U.S. each year. In fact, one in three women in the U.S. has had a hysterectomy by age 60. However, 60 percent of hysterectomies are still being performed through a traditional abdominal incision, requiring a much longer recuperation period.
(), located in West St. Louis County, is known for its top rated Heart Center and Childbirth Center, delivering more than 4,000 babies each year. Missouri Baptist Medical Center is a member of BJC HealthCare, one of the largest nonprofit health care organizations in the United States and the largest employer in St. Louis.
