Rain and Rising Damp
(firmenpresse) - MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 07/23/12 -- With the wet weather continuing across the UK, retailer Swinton is warning homeowners to safeguard against damp rot.
Rain penetration can be one of the main causes of damp in buildings and with the UK suffering some of the wettest weather on record Swinton is expecting the number of damp cases to rise.
In a survey of 1,000 homeowners Swinton revealed that 27% have suffered some kind of damage from damp in the past five years.
Swinton is offering the following advice to homeowners to protect against damp:
- Have a good look at the roof. Problems with the roof are a common cause of damp.
- Ensure that any cracks in the walls or window frames are fixed.
- Use damp proofing products such as creams or silicon water repellents.
- Use extractor fans in the kitchen and bathrooms - rooms where there is a lot of steam.
- Try out a climate control humidifier.
- Check that all the windows in the property are opened regularly to allow a 'change of air'.
Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at said, "Damp can crop up almost anywhere in the house and once it has taken a hold of your property it can be difficult to eradicate. It's not only damaging for the house, but also your health. Regularly checking your property for cracks in the walls and windows will help prevent damp rot. If you're home is prone to having damp conditions invest in a climate control humidifier or use damp proofing products where you can.
