AMA Foundation Welcomes Four New National Board Members
New President Pledges Renewed Connection With the Medical Community
(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 07/18/12 -- The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation welcomed four new members to the national philanthropic organization's . As elected members of the Board, these individuals will contribute their expertise to advance the mission of the AMA Foundation by ensuring that the organization successfully raises, stewards and administers funds for high-impact public health programs.
The AMA Foundation also celebrates a new President, , a psychiatrist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who has served on the Foundation's Board of Directors since 2005.
"I have been in the AMA's House of Delegates for 15 years," Dr. Chou said at the Opening Session of the AMA Annual Meeting. "As the current Chair of the Wisconsin Delegation, I hope to strengthen the connection between the House of Delegates, state and specialty foundations, and our philanthropic affiliate -- the AMA Foundation."
The , a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, advances public health and medical scholarship by raising philanthropic support for physician-directed initiatives. The AMA Foundation is pleased to welcome the following individuals to the Board of Directors:
- Sarah Sanders, PharmD, is the Secretary of the AMA Alliance, and has been an AMA Alliance member for more than 25 years. Dr. Sanders earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Purdue University, as well as an MA in Gerontology from Ball State University. She currently serves on the Minority Advocacy Council of the Purdue University College of Pharmacy.
Benjamin Schanker serves as the Board's student representative. He attends Harvard Medical School, where he is expected to graduate in 2014. Mr. Schanker graduated summa cum laude from Boston University in 2009. He also serves as a student representative on the Massachusetts Medical Society Board of Trustees, and is the Chair for Student Membership in the American College of Medical Quality.
Patricia Turner, MD, is the Director of the Division of Member Services at The American College of Surgeons, and will serve as an Adjunct Associate Professor in Surgery at Northwestern University. Dr. Turner served as a member of the American Surgical Association's Blue Ribbon Committee on Surgical Education, the AMA's Council on Scientific Affairs and the Association of Academic Surgery's Ethics Committee.
Melanie Walker, MD, is Deputy Director for Special Initiatives at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. In her previous role, Dr. Walker worked with the World Health Organization in China. She was recently awarded the Hoffman Endowed Lectureship by the American Academy of Pediatric Neurosurgery, and named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
