Cycle to Work Tips

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 07/17/12 -- Leading Evans Cycles is one of the biggest providers in the UK of the Government's Cycle to Work Scheme. The scheme itself promotes cycling through tax incentives and can save employees up to 42% on retail prices without any additional cost to the employer.

Being part of the scheme is one of the core principles of Evans Cycles, but it doesn't stop there. Safety whilst riding to work is also of paramount concern. Here are Evans top tips for cycling to work.

Choosing your bike

Many commuters opt for a hybrid bike and with good reason. If you live over 20 miles from work a may present the best option. However, cycling to work could also potentially include trickier surfaces which may require something a little sturdier. A hybrid represents a great option as it's a good compromise between speed and comfort. The narrow tyres enable you to pick up speed, with the upright seating position offering comfort.

Get your gear

The bike is of course imperative, but you shouldn't stop there. You'll definitely need a lock and a helmet is an absolute must when riding on the roads. During the winter months, a high-visibility jacket is also required, as is a backpack, waterproof jacket, and of course lights.

Get clued up

If you drive you know the rules of the road, but things can be very different when you swap four wheels for two. Read up on your Highway Code and always make sure you're aware of your surroundings and the traffic.

Plan your route

You may have done the route a hundred times before either in your car or on the bus, but things can become very different once you're on your bike. Make sure you plan your route out in your head before leaving and also ensure you take into account the time it will take you to reach your destination. If there is a cycle path on your normal route great, but if not think about changing things up. Remember, smaller roads are much better for cyclists than cars.

Think about your destination

Where can you leave your bike? Will it be in full view? It's important to try and find something solid and shielded; then lock your bike to it. This will instantly make it less attractive to thieves.
