CasinoFYI Survey Finds 81% of Americans Do Not Support Online Gambling Prohibition
(firmenpresse) - DENVER, CO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/17/12 -- An internet survey conducted on behalf of found that 81% of Americans do not support a nationwide ban on online gambling.
The results of the survey show that the American public is open to the idea of legal online gambling. Policymakers claim that online gambling is dangerous and immoral, but the results of this survey indicate that the prohibition of online gambling goes against the will of the American people.
Wes Burns, owner of CasinoFYI.com, had this to say:
"It's no surprise really. The ban on online gambling is ineffective and hypocritical. The ban has done nothing to stop online gambling and has only served to push the market underground."
The survey sampled a random selection of 4,000 internet users and asked them how they feel about the legalization of online gambling. A large majority of those surveyed supported some form of legalization at the state or federal level.
The survey asked how people feel about the legalization of online gambling and offered four choices:
We should let each state decide
Legalize and tax it at the federal level
It should be banned nationwide
Legalize it nationwide but not tax it
The most popular response was to let each state decide. That option was favored by 46.1% of the respondents. The second most popular response was to legalize and tax it at the federal level. That option was chosen by 24.9% of the respondents.
The third most popular option was to ban online gambling nationwide. That option was picked by 18.9% of the respondents. The option to legalize online gambling but not tax it was picked by 10.0% of the respondents.
The survey also asked 1,000 people if they had gambled online for real money within the past 12 months. Only 6.4% of the people responded with a yes while 93.6% of the people responded with a no. It is interesting to note that even though the vast majority of Americans have not gambled online for real money within the past year, most still support some form of legalized online gambling.
A third survey question asked 1,000 people to pick the best argument AGAINST the legalization of online gambling and offered five choices:
Potential for increased gambling addiction
Possibility of unfair or rigged games
Potential for minors to gamble online
Gambling is an immoral act
Potential for money laundering
The potential for increased gambling addiction and the possibility of unfair or rigged games were the two most popular options. Increased gambling addiction was picked by 31.8% of the respondents and the possibility of unfair or rigged games was picked by 28.9% of the respondents.
The potential for minors to gamble online was picked by 22.4% of the respondents while the "gambling is an immoral act" option was picked by 9.1% of the respondents. Only 7.9% of those surveyed picked the potential for money laundering.
A fourth survey question asked 1,000 people to pick the best argument FOR the legalization of online gambling and offered five choices:
It is a matter of free choice
It would increase tax revenue
Prohibition doesn't work
It would create jobs in the U.S.
It would add safeguards for online gamblers
It is a matter of free choice was favored by 45.1% of respondents. Increased tax revenue was chosen by 20.5% of respondents. Prohibition doesn't work was picked by 19.7% of respondents. Job creation was picked by 9.2% of respondents and safeguards for gamblers was picked by 5.4% of respondents.
This survey was NOT hosted at CasinoFYI.com. The owner of CasinoFYI.com felt that hosting the survey at a gambling-related website would have skewed answers. The survey was outsourced to the "Google Insights" survey service and the questions appeared on a variety of news, reference and arts/entertainment websites. The goal was to capture a broad cross section of internet users.
