Public Safety Minister Toews Gives Update on Border Action Plan at the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region Summit
(firmenpresse) - SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwire) -- 07/16/12 -- The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, spoke on the economic and security benefits of the Action Plan on Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness at today's Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) 22nd Annual Summit.
The Action Plan, a joint initiative between Canada and the U.S., sets ambitious but achievable goals that advance economic opportunity and lead to greater security across our shared border.
"We are making great progress. We have, for example, added NEXUS lanes, made air cargo screening programs mutually recognizable and installed new passenger screening machines to end duplicate screening in Canadian airports," explained Minister Toews. "More work continues every day to fully implement this new shared vision that represents the most significant step forward in Canada-U.S. cooperation since the North American Free Trade Agreement."
Speaking to the summit audience of key business leaders, legislators, and government leaders from PNWER's 10 states, provinces, and territories considering major policy issues impacting the region, the Minister outlined how, "the Action Plan will give both countries the opportunity for greater efficiency and effectiveness at our border."
On December 7, 2011, Prime Minister Harper and President Obama announced the Action Plan on Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness which aims to increase North American security and at the same time revitalize cooperation, trade, and North American competitiveness.
