U.S.English Poll Results Show Overwhelming Support for English as Official Language of United States
(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 07/09/12 -- U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today made the following statement upon the release of poll results showing overwhelming support for English as America's official language.
The Harris Interactive poll found 88 percent of respondents agree that English should be the official language of the United States. Broken down by political party, this includes 96 percent of Republicans, 83 percent of Democrats and 89 percent of Independents. The results show support for Official English extends to 89 percent of males and 87 percent of females, and even 83 percent of Hispanics agree that English should be America's official language.
"These poll results confirm what U.S.English has long declared: the English language is a bond that reaches far beyond political party and demographic," Chairman Mujica said. "Making English the official language of the United States government will give legal recognition to the common bond of a common language. Americans speak more than 329 different languages, and the English language is the one factor with the ability to unite us all. Legislators should take note of the will of the American people and continue to make strides toward enacting Official English legislation."
The poll of 1,009 adults was conducted by phone by Harris Interactive between June 21-24, 2012.
U.S.English, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest non-partisan citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa of California, U.S.English, Inc. () now has more than 1.8 million members.
